How loot works in Crimson Moon
Where equipment comes from, what purification means, which upgrades persist, how difficulty affects rewards, and where the official information stops.

Loot is the bridge between a single run and long-term progression. Temporary Boons make the current hunt stronger, but purified equipment changes what you can bring into later missions. That separation prevents every failed run from being meaningless while preserving risk around newly discovered items.
The four confirmed loot sources
| Source | What it tells us | What remains unknown |
|---|---|---|
| Chests | Exploration and route choice can produce equipment. | Chest tiers, locations, and exact loot pools. |
| Elite enemies | Harder combat targets can reward gear. | Guaranteed versus random drops. |
| Bosses | Major encounters are part of the reward loop. | Unique drops, repeat rewards, and pity systems. |
| Mission rewards | Objectives provide a structured reward source. | Scoring, bonus conditions, and reward previews. |
Purification and permanent ownership
Finding equipment does not automatically mean it has joined every future loadout. The official loot explainer says players purify powerful equipment to permanently add it to the arsenal. Purification is therefore the key verb in the progression system. It marks the transition from something carried in the current hunt to a reusable option at Sanctus Clypeus.
The pre-release materials do not yet provide a complete purification economy. We do not know every required resource, whether purification happens only after a successful return, or how failure treats each category of unpurified loot. Any page that claims exact costs or loss percentages before official confirmation is speculating.
Equipment, rarity, and upgrades
The confirmed permanent loadout categories are weapons, armor, and trinkets. Weapons bring their own Weapon Arts, opening different approaches to combat. Armor sets and gear support different playstyles. Trinkets add another layer to the starting build. Consumables are found during hunts, although their complete persistence rules are not yet public.
Equipment has rarity, and the reward ceiling increases with difficulty. ProbablyMonsters says pushing higher difficulty offers opportunities for higher-rarity gear. That makes difficulty both a challenge setting and an optimization choice. A player can seek safer progression or accept more dangerous Wards for a better chance at valuable rewards.
Favorite equipment can be upgraded over time to face increasingly dangerous Wards. This means an early find may remain relevant instead of being immediately discarded. However, official sources have not published a full upgrade tree, cap, material list, or comparison between base item rarity and upgraded power.
Loot versus Boons
Loot and Boons should not be treated as synonyms. Loot supplies persistent equipment and hunt resources. Boons are temporary effects chosen during the run, often through Nexus Gates. A Boon may increase damage, restore health, improve survival, or create a synergy, but it does not become a permanent item merely because it was selected.
This split also explains build variety. A player enters with a planned equipment foundation, then adapts to the Boons offered during the mission. The permanent arsenal determines what strategies are available at the start; the temporary choices determine how that strategy evolves under pressure.
Source note: ProbablyMonsters explicitly identified loot and progression as a frequently asked topic and published a dedicated gameplay explainer. This guide summarizes those confirmed systems and leaves drop rates, complete rarity names, and exact costs unfilled.
