How runs work in Crimson Moon

The full hunt loop explained: prepare at the sanctuary, select a mission, push through a Ward, evolve a build, secure equipment, and decide what survives the return.

ProbablyMonsters made a dedicated “How Runs Work” explainer because this was one of the questions the team saw most often. The confusion is understandable. A trailer shows a third-person warrior moving through a gothic city, but the game is not presented as one continuous pilgrimage. Its rhythm alternates between a stable headquarters and replayable missions that reshape the wider war.

Step by step

The hunt from start to finish

1. Prepare at Sanctus Clypeus

The Church headquarters is the home base. Here you review equipment, build a loadout, choose an Angel, upgrade favored gear, use the Blacksmith, and speak with NPCs. Preparation is the persistent side of the game: your available arsenal reflects what earlier hunts successfully added.

2. Choose a mission at the War Table

The War Table charts the ongoing invasion and reveals available missions. A mission belongs to a Ward within a district of Gildenarch. The table is where the player chooses the next incursion and difficulty. Higher difficulty raises the danger while creating opportunities for higher-rarity rewards.

3. Enter the Ward

Inside the city, a Ward can contain objectives, combat encounters, elite enemies, minibosses, secrets, mission modifiers, and a larger boss confrontation. The exact composition can evolve. Official descriptions say the world remembers, reshapes, and pushes back, which supports replayability without requiring identical repetition.

4. Build temporary power

Nexus Gates offer Boons during the hunt. These can increase damage, restore health, improve survivability, or create combinations with a weapon, Weapon Art, equipment set, Angel, or partner. Boons are temporary choices for the current run. They allow the starting loadout to branch in different directions after the mission begins.

5. Collect and purify loot

Weapons, armor, trinkets, consumables, and other rewards can come from chests, elite enemies, bosses, and mission completion. Powerful equipment needs to be purified to become part of the permanent arsenal. This makes the return journey and successful conclusion important; finding an item and permanently owning it are separate steps.

6. Return, upgrade, and open the next hunt

Back at the sanctuary, permanent equipment and upgrades support the next loadout. Successful progress can unlock missions, modifiers, and skill achievements. Temporary Boons do not become a permanent stack. The loop repeats, but the city state, challenge, available equipment, and player knowledge can move forward.

Source note: The sequence above follows the official run explainer and Steam feature descriptions. The site does not state exact run length, procedural-generation percentages, drop-loss rules, or extraction thresholds because those details were not fully confirmed.

What happens when you die?

For two-player co-op, official material describes a shared Life Pool. A fallen ally can be resurrected while shared lives remain, making a partner part of the recovery system. This is stronger than a simple revive timer because mistakes draw from a common resource. It also creates a reason to coordinate survival tools and complementary Boons.

How long is a run?

No reliable official average run length had been published by the last review date. Community searches show real interest in both run length and total game length, but a guessed “30–60 minute” answer would be misleading. Mission duration can also vary by difficulty, secrets, team size, and objective. This guide will add tested ranges only after launch.

Frequently asked

Run structure FAQ

How do runs work in Crimson Moon?

A run begins at Sanctus Clypeus, where you prepare a build and select a mission from the War Table. Purified gear and permanent upgrades carry forward; temporary run powers reset.

What carries over between Crimson Moon runs?

Official explainers confirm permanent equipment unlocks, purified gear, upgrades, and broader progression. Temporary Boons selected through Nexus Gates evolve the current run and do not form the permanent layer.

What happens when you die in Crimson Moon?

Co-op uses a shared Life Pool and allows allies to resurrect a fallen partner while lives remain. The exact solo failure penalty and every condition for lost, secured, or purified loot had not been fully documented in the official sources reviewed on August 13, 2026.

What are Wards and missions?

Gildenarch is divided into districts and Wards. A Ward can contain missions, elite enemies, minibosses, secrets, modifiers, and a boss objective. The War Table is the selection and planning interface for incursions.
